Ancient Art. Living Plant. Modern Home.
The Kokedama Money Tree is two things at once: a thriving, braided Money Tree plant and a handcrafted living design piece rooted in centuries of Japanese tradition. "Kokedama" — literally "moss ball" in Japanese — is the practice of wrapping a plant's roots in a sphere of rich soil and binding it with lush green moss, creating a self-contained, sculptural planting that is as beautiful as it is functional. The result is something that feels genuinely unlike anything else in the houseplant world.
The Money Tree (Pachira aquatica) is one of the most beloved plants in feng shui tradition, long associated with good fortune, prosperity, and positive energy. Its distinctive braided trunk and bright, palmate leaves are instantly recognizable — and in kokedama form, that familiar charm is elevated into something truly special. Whether displayed on a plate, suspended from a cord, or nestled in a decorative bowl, it becomes a living centerpiece that draws the eye and invites conversation.
Why You'll Love It
- Two art forms in one — the ancient Japanese practice of kokedama meets the beloved Money Tree; a plant and an art object in a single, beautiful package
- Braided trunk — the Money Tree's signature braided stem is a symbol of good fortune and adds a sculptural, handcrafted quality to an already distinctive plant
- Symbol of prosperity — long associated with good luck and positive energy in feng shui tradition; a meaningful and beautiful gift for new homes, businesses, and celebrations
- Versatile display — rest it on a plate or shallow dish, place it in a decorative bowl, or suspend it with twine for a dramatic hanging display
- Pet friendly — non-toxic to cats and dogs, a safe and auspicious choice for pet-friendly homes
- Air purifying — the Money Tree is recognized for filtering indoor air pollutants for a cleaner, healthier environment
Care Guide
- Light: Bright indirect light is ideal — a spot near an east or west-facing window works beautifully. Tolerates medium indirect light but growth will slow. Avoid direct sun, which scorches the leaves, and very low light, which causes yellowing and weak growth
- Watering (Kokedama Method): Kokedama are watered differently from potted plants. When the moss ball feels light and slightly dry to the touch, submerge it in a bowl of room-temperature water for 10–15 minutes, allowing the moss and soil to absorb moisture fully. Remove, gently squeeze out excess water, and allow to drain before returning to its display spot. Water every 1–2 weeks depending on your environment — more frequently in warm, dry conditions
- Humidity: Appreciates moderate to high humidity; mist the moss ball and leaves lightly between soakings to maintain moisture and keep the moss lush and green
- Temperature: Prefers 65–85°F (18–29°C); keep away from cold drafts, air conditioning vents, and temperatures below 60°F
- Fertilizer: Feed monthly during spring and summer by adding a diluted balanced liquid fertilizer to the soaking water; reduce to every 6–8 weeks in fall and winter
- Moss care: Keep the moss moist and green with regular misting; if the moss begins to dry out and brown, increase misting frequency or move to a more humid environment
Display Ideas
The Kokedama Money Tree is one of the most versatile and visually striking plants you can display. Rest it on a ceramic plate or shallow dish on a coffee table or desk for an elegant, grounded look. Place it in a decorative bowl filled with pebbles for a zen-inspired centerpiece. Or suspend it from the ceiling or a plant hanger with natural twine for a dramatic floating display that showcases the moss ball from every angle. However you choose to display it, it will be the first thing people notice when they walk into the room.
Tip: The moss ball is your watering indicator — when it feels noticeably lighter than usual and the moss begins to look slightly dry, it's time to soak. A well-hydrated kokedama feels heavier and the moss stays a vibrant, lush green. Keep the leaves gleaming with a gentle spritz of our Leaf Shine Spray between soakings for a plant that looks as polished as it feels.
