Bold Foliage, Effortless Presence

Few houseplants make a statement quite like the Dieffenbachia. With its broad, paddle-shaped leaves splashed in creamy whites, soft yellows, and deep greens, it brings a lush, tropical energy to any room — and does it with almost no fuss. It's the kind of plant that looks like it belongs in a boutique hotel lobby but thrives just as happily in your living room.

Native to the tropical Americas, Dieffenbachia has been a staple of indoor plant collections for decades, prized for its fast growth, dramatic foliage, and remarkable adaptability to typical home conditions. Whether you're a seasoned plant parent looking to fill a corner or a beginner wanting something that rewards minimal effort with maximum impact, the Dieffenbachia delivers.

Why You'll Love It

  • Stunning variegated foliage — each leaf is a unique pattern of green, cream, and white; no two plants look exactly alike
  • Fast grower — with good light and regular watering, Dieffenbachia can put out new leaves quickly, giving you a visibly thriving plant in a short time
  • Low light tolerant — adapts well to lower light conditions, making it versatile for a range of rooms and spaces
  • Air purifying — helps filter common indoor air pollutants for a fresher living environment
  • Beginner friendly — forgiving of occasional missed waterings and adaptable to a range of humidity levels

Care Guide

  • Light: Thrives in bright to medium indirect light; tolerates low light but growth will slow. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch and bleach the leaves
  • Water: Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil feel dry — roughly every 1–2 weeks. Allow excess water to drain freely; Dieffenbachia does not like sitting in soggy soil
  • Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity; mist the leaves occasionally or place on a pebble tray with water for a natural humidity boost
  • Temperature: Prefers 60–85°F (15–29°C); keep away from cold drafts, air conditioning vents, and sudden temperature drops
  • Fertilizer: Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer; reduce or stop feeding in fall and winter
  • Repotting: Repot every 1–2 years or when roots begin to emerge from the drainage holes; our Premium Potting Soil is an excellent choice for a healthy refresh

A Note on Safety

The Dieffenbachia gets its common name from the sap in its stems and leaves, which contains calcium oxalate crystals that can cause temporary mouth and throat irritation if ingested. Keep out of reach of children and pets, and wash hands after handling. With normal, mindful care it is a completely safe and beautiful addition to your home.

Tip: Wipe the leaves down with a damp cloth every few weeks to remove dust and keep the foliage looking its glossy best — or reach for our Leaf Shine Spray for an effortless polish.
