The Plant That Keeps on Giving — Now Fully Grown
At 6 inches, the Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum) has hit its stride. The arching, variegated leaves — bright green with a creamy white stripe — cascade outward in a full, lush fountain that fills a hanging planter, a high shelf, or a plant stand with effortless, cheerful energy. And at this size, it's already producing the long, arching runners tipped with miniature spiderettes that make the Spider Plant one of the most beloved and generous plants in the world.
The Spider Plant has been a fixture of homes, offices, and classrooms for generations — and for good reason. It tolerates low light, irregular watering, temperature fluctuations, and the kind of imperfect conditions that challenge most other plants. It's virtually indestructible, endlessly propagating, and one of the top air-purifying plants on the planet. At 6 inches, all of those qualities are on full display.
Why the 6-Inch?
- Full, lush presence from day one — a well-established plant with a dense canopy of arching variegated leaves that fills a hanging planter or elevated display immediately
- Already producing runners — at 6 inches, the Spider Plant is mature enough to be actively sending out long runners tipped with spiderettes; the propagation journey starts right away
- More dramatic cascading effect — longer, fuller leaves and more runners create the iconic waterfall silhouette that makes Spider Plants so visually striking in elevated displays
- Top-ranked air purifier — among the top performers in NASA's Clean Air Study, filtering formaldehyde, xylene, and carbon monoxide from indoor air
- Pet friendly — non-toxic to cats and dogs; a safe, cheerful, and virtually indestructible choice for pet-friendly homes
- Nearly indestructible — tolerates low light, irregular watering, and general neglect with remarkable grace; one of the most forgiving houseplants available at any size
Care Guide
- Light: Bright to medium indirect light brings out the most vivid variegation and supports the most prolific runner and spiderette production. Tolerates low light well, though the white stripe may become less pronounced and runner production will slow. Avoid prolonged direct sun, which scorches and bleaches the delicate variegated leaves
- Water: Allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings — roughly every 1–2 weeks. Water thoroughly and allow excess to drain fully. At 6 inches, the larger root system means slightly more water per session but the same general rhythm. Spider Plants are sensitive to fluoride and chlorine in tap water, which causes brown leaf tips — use filtered or distilled water when possible, or leave tap water out overnight before using
- Humidity: Comfortable in average household humidity; appreciates occasional misting but adapts well to drier conditions without complaint
- Temperature: Adaptable to a wide range of temperatures — 65–85°F (18–29°C) is ideal, but tolerates cooler conditions better than most tropical plants. Keep away from frost and prolonged temperatures below 50°F
- Fertilizer: Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer; avoid over-fertilizing, which causes brown leaf tips and excessive salt buildup
- Repotting: Spider Plants produce more runners and spiderettes when slightly root-bound, so don't rush to size up. Repot when roots are visibly crowding the pot or emerging from drainage holes; our Premium Potting Soil provides the well-draining, nutrient-rich environment they thrive in
Propagating Your Spiderettes
One of the greatest joys of owning a Spider Plant is watching it produce spiderettes — the miniature plantlets that dangle from long, arching runners. At 6 inches, your plant may already be producing them. Once a spiderette has developed small roots of its own, snip it from the runner and place it in a small pot of moist soil or a glass of water to root. Within a few weeks, you'll have an entirely new plant — ready to keep, share, or gift. A single Spider Plant can produce dozens of spiderettes over its lifetime.
Styling Ideas
The 6-inch Spider Plant's full, cascading form is made for elevated displays where the runners and spiderettes can dangle freely — a hanging planter, a macramé hanger, a high shelf, or a tall plant stand. It looks beautiful in simple ceramic pots, woven baskets, and natural fiber hangers. For a lush, layered display, pair it with the trailing Marble Queen Pothos or the bold Rubber Plant for a mix of textures, tones, and growth habits that feels effortlessly curated.
Tip: Brown leaf tips are almost always caused by fluoride in tap water or over-fertilizing — switch to filtered water and ease up on feeding for clean, crisp edges. And keep those cheerful variegated leaves looking their freshest with a light spritz of our Leaf Shine Spray.
