Three Colors. One Showstopper.
The Stromanthe TrioStar earns its name honestly. Each leaf is a living canvas of three distinct colors — deep green brushstrokes, creamy white variegation, and a rich magenta-pink underside that flashes brilliantly every time the leaves move. And move they do. Like its prayer plant cousins, the TrioStar raises and folds its leaves with the rhythm of the day, revealing that stunning pink underside in the evening like a quiet, daily reveal.
Part of the Marantaceae family and native to the tropical forests of Brazil, the Stromanthe TrioStar is one of the most visually complex and rewarding houseplants you can own. It's not the easiest plant in the world — it has preferences, and it will let you know when they're not being met — but for the plant parent willing to give it a little extra attention, the payoff is a plant that looks genuinely extraordinary in any space.
Why You'll Love It
- Tricolor foliage — green, cream, and magenta-pink on a single leaf; one of the most striking color combinations in the houseplant world
- Living leaf movement — leaves rise and fold with the light cycle, flashing the vivid pink underside as day turns to night; a mesmerizing daily ritual
- Pet friendly — non-toxic to cats and dogs, a safe and spectacular choice for pet-friendly homes
- No two leaves alike — the variegation pattern is unique on every single leaf, making your plant a genuinely one-of-a-kind specimen
- Air purifying — helps filter indoor air pollutants for a cleaner, healthier living environment
Care Guide
- Light: Bright indirect light is essential for maintaining the vivid tricolor variegation — the more light it receives (without direct sun), the more contrast between the green, cream, and pink. In lower light, the cream and pink tones will fade toward green. Avoid direct sun, which will scorch and bleach the delicate variegated portions of the leaves
- Water: Keep soil consistently moist but never waterlogged — water when the top inch feels dry. Use filtered, distilled, or rainwater whenever possible; like all Marantaceae, the TrioStar is sensitive to the fluoride and minerals in tap water, which cause brown leaf tips. Allow excess water to drain fully
- Humidity: This is where the TrioStar has strong opinions — it loves high humidity (60%+) and will show its displeasure with crispy leaf edges and browning tips if the air is too dry. Mist regularly, use a pebble tray, or place near a humidifier for best results. A bathroom with good indirect light is an ideal home
- Temperature: Prefers 65–85°F (18–29°C); keep away from cold drafts, air conditioning vents, and sudden temperature changes, all of which stress the plant and cause leaf curl
- Fertilizer: Feed monthly during spring and summer with a diluted balanced liquid fertilizer; avoid over-fertilizing, which causes leaf burn and salt buildup in the soil
- Soil: A well-draining, moisture-retentive mix is ideal; our Premium Potting Soil is an excellent match when it's time to repot
Reading Your TrioStar
The Stromanthe TrioStar is an expressive plant — it communicates clearly when something is off. Curling leaves usually signal low humidity or cold drafts. Brown leaf tips point to tap water minerals or dry air. Fading variegation means it needs more light. Once you learn to read these signals, caring for the TrioStar becomes intuitive — and deeply rewarding.
Tip: Keep those spectacular tricolor leaves clean and vibrant with our Leaf Shine Spray — dust-free leaves not only look more vivid, they help the TrioStar absorb the bright indirect light it needs to maintain that stunning pink and cream variegation.
